Welcome to The Red Lion in Ellesmere

Our family run pub is a 16th century Coaching Inn evidence of which can be seen as you walk around the building. We welcome you through the same doors that the horses would of come through to access the stables in our courtyard.

We are perfectly located right in the middle of Shropshire’s “mini Lake District” where you will find 9 beautiful Meres in total, with ours - "The Mere" - being the biggest and most popular with families and wildlife enthusiasts. We are also a few minutes walk from the "Shropshire Union Canal" and BlackWater Marina where you can pick up a canal boat up to enjoy as part of a canal holiday!

Here at The Red Lion we pride ourselves on our warm, friendly and vibrant atmosphere which makes for a perfect setting when enjoying one of our home cooked meals, accompanied by some of the most popular thirst quenching drinks.

So please come and visit us! We welcome walk-ins, dogs (and their well behaved owners!), families, parties and private functions. You can even stay over in one of our newly refurbished rooms to experience the whole package. We have family rooms, ground floor rooms with disabled access and rooms with baths. We hope to see you soon! Cheers!

Made a late table booking for 2 on Friday night; busy, but accommodated with a welcoming smile by the pleasant staff. A couple of pints of the new Thwaites IPA and a couple of super-tasty ‘build your own’ burgers were ordered and swiftly served…. WOW! Thick, juicy patties with the additional chosen fillings piled into a logo-seared brioche bun, with seasoned triple cooked chips on the side and a fat battered onion ring. I reckon these burgers are up there with the best I’ve had - well cooked, put together well, with ‘all the trimmings’ included. (I went with single beef patty, bacon, cheddar, American mustard and ketchup - simple but easy to get wrong!). Ellesmere’s answer to Five Guys? I think it’s actually better, cheaper, and doesn’t need a long car journey to get there. We’ll be back soon!

Just got back 10 minutes excited to review. We came this year in March for the first time and I was so excited to come again after the first visit the food was so amazing so I had very high hopes, We are in the area on holiday and I specifically booked the holiday just so we could visit this pub for Sunday lunch. That’s how good it is. Sounds sad I know lol but I am a massive foodie and it’s hard to find a decent pub that is decent affordable and that serves good food Let me just say the Sunday roast did not disappoint i was absolutely buzzing it tasted just as good as the first visit if not better. And the puddings hello delicious I could go on in detail on the roast, the green beans that were marinated in mint and not to mention the crispy sweet cabbage delicious the meat melted your chef needs a pay rise you are extremely lucky he/she is talented. Even if it’s a year or 2 I will definitely be back again booking another holiday just to return to this pub for a roast dinner if I lived in this village I would be the size of a whale I would eat here all the time thank god I don’t Thanks for the amazing food service and prices

We are from out of country and visited the Red Lion for the second time in less than a week because our first time was so good! The second time was just as good as the first. We all had a different dish each time and all the food was delicious. The young ladies serving us were prompt and nice and the bartender Margaret was delightful. Delicious, homemade food with cold beer…what’s not to love? Wish we lived closer!

The pub was excellent. We are on a canal boat holiday along the Llangollen canal. We moored up in Ellesmere and walked up to the town. There's a pool table and board games. Kids loved it. Food really great and good value too. Might try and visit on way back if we can.. another game of pool!
